How we pick and check these tours
How to choose
- Going between 15 May and 17 September: that's the only time whale-shark tours run. Outside it, choose one of the Isla Mujeres trips.
- Lowest total cost: add the operator fee before comparing. The catamaran works out at about US$82 (US$37 + US$45, transport included). The cruise is about US$99 (US$79 + US$20), or US$114 with pickup.
- Want time in Isla Mujeres town: both list it. The catamaran includes time in town, and the cruise's itinerary includes free time in town within its 3-hour island stop.
- Whale sharks, Isla Mujeres or Cancún start: same operator. The Isla Mujeres departure (from US$147) has no pickup but includes dock fees and taxes. The Cancún & Riviera Maya version (from US$177) includes hotel pickup and drop-off.
- Snorkeling without a boat day: sea turtles at Akumal on the Tulum, cenote & Akumal tour, a park day at Xel-Há with gear included, or cenotes on the 3-cenote small-group tour.
Planning notes (official sources, checked 16 Oct 2026)
- Marine-park fee: the official fee for the Parque Nacional Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc is MXN 125 per person (CONANP). The US$45 and US$20 charges on the two Isla Mujeres trips are the operators' own fees, not official figures.
- Whale-shark season: observation and swimming are authorized 15 May – 17 September for the 2025, 2026 and 2027 seasons (SEMARNAT management plan, PDF, Table 2). Some listings say "May to September"; the official dates are the ones above.
- Wildlife: sightings are never guaranteed, on either whale-shark tour.
- Not included because unverified: the public ferry to Isla Mujeres (schedule and price) and sea conditions.
- Age rules differ by tour. Where a listing states one, such as the under-1 baby rule on the whale-shark trips, you'll find it on that tour's page; the other listings don't state an age rule, so check with the operator before booking with young children.
Questions
When is whale shark season in Cancún?
The authorized period is 15 May to 17 September, for the 2025–2027 seasons (SEMARNAT). Both whale-shark tours on our list run only in that window.
Are the Isla Mujeres dock and reef fees official?
No. The US$45 (catamaran) and US$20 (cruise) charges are set by the operators. The only official fee we could verify is CONANP's MXN 125 per person for the marine park around Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún and Punta Nizuc.
Which Isla Mujeres trip is cheaper overall?
The catamaran: from US$37 plus its US$45 fee is about US$82 with transport included. The cruise is from US$79 plus US$20, about US$99, or US$114 with hotel pickup. Tips and photos are extra on both.
Whale sharks from Isla Mujeres or from Cancún?
Both trips are run by Isla Fun Tours. From Isla Mujeres it's from US$147, with no pickup (you meet the boat) and dock fees and taxes included. From Cancún & Riviera Maya it's from US$177, with hotel pickup and drop-off included and drop-offs at El Café de Gina, Isla Blanca and Moon Palace.
Am I guaranteed to see a whale shark?
No. They're wild animals, so sightings are never guaranteed. Book inside the official season.
Where else can I snorkel near Cancún?
With sea turtles in Akumal on the Tulum, cenote & Akumal tour, at Xel-Há (gear included in the ticket), or in cenotes on the 3-cenote tour. See Cenotes & Mayan ruins and Xcaret parks.
